Manhattan
Greetings from New York City! Thompson is out at the NY Gift Show, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to hack into his journal and fill you in on what’s been going on around here (I’m Keri, by the way, one of the many brothers and sisters in this group who’ve worked in the shop but never make it into the commericials and so, therefore, remain completely unknown to you. Hi.).
As many of you know, Homescapes, Carmel was nominated for an award from Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine and the awards ceremony was held last night at the world-famous Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. We flew here steeling ourselves for whatever way this awards thing went but basically we all felt we were lucky to even have been nominated, so no matter what happened we would be happy with the outcome. (I know, I know, everyone says that but heck ,we’re in New Yo’k City, what more can you ask for?) Besides, Crate and Barrel was one of the award winners and we’re just some little guys from Carmel.
The city itself was sweating; everything seemed to be drenched and we were about to embark on five hours with a roomful of people we didn’t know so we were all pretty nervous about the whole thing.
We took our spots at our table and as the grand ballroom filled we were joined by one of the Editors for Gifts and Dec, the director of the Gift Show whose company was sponsoring the awards and a couple of pre-announced honorees. I guess that should have been our clue that we might have a lucky night but self-protecting cynicism told me that maybe they just thought we looked like charming people and they wanted to sit next to us. It was just a coincidence that our assigned seats were up front.
Finally our category came up and there were three awards to give: one Gold Award and two Silvers. We were nominated for our promotions…the advertising, the fundraisers, the community stuff…so they ran a REALLY nice film about us right there in the ballroom. Photos, clips from our commercials and then every little sister’s worst nightmare: my older brothers' cheese-cake pictures from the 2004 events calendar “Men and Women of the Monterey Peninsula.”
Thompson and Beau were both ducking their heads in embarrassment, but how did they think I felt? I was blinded! "My eyes! My eyes! My burning, wretched eyes!!"
Luckily Homescapes won the Gold after all that. Can you imagine the embarrassment of being literally exposed in front of your peers on the big screen at the Plaza and then LOSING? But Thompson’s acceptance speech seemed to ease the awkwardness when we got up onstage… "Usually when you’re doing public speaking you’re supposed to picture the audience naked.”
hee hee!

Times Square: Home of the nicest policemen ever! .. and I mean it!
The Chrysler Building ... just because it's perty.
The Empire State Building (see the sweat?)
...and speaking of sweat. Thompson (left) & Beau (right) with Joseph Santoro and Michael Bhoannan from Santoro & Company Gifts and Antiques (winners of last year's award).
